WOOTOUR: Carrying Memory Forward

A piece of jewelry begins with what can be seen and touched: the color of a stone, the weight of metal, the balance of a form against the body. WOOTOUR builds from these tangible details. Founded in Dege in 2018, the jewelry brand works with natural turquoise and other carefully selected materials to create earrings and adornments shaped by Tibetan visual culture and made for contemporary wear.

The name WOOTOUR comes from the Tibetan word for a traditional herders’ sling. Made to cast a stone across a long distance, the sling is a practical object rooted in life on the grasslands. In the brand’s own telling, it is also associated with good fortune, the protection of home, and the wish to carry happiness forward. That relationship between movement and memory gives WOOTOUR its direction: cultural forms are not held still, but carried into new contexts through objects people can live with today.

From Dege, Through a Contemporary Lens

WOOTOUR was founded by creative director Sangzhu Dolma, who grew up in Dege and later studied jewelry appreciation and design-related practice. She is recognized locally as an inheritor of intangible cultural heritage in Dege County. Her work begins with close knowledge of Tibetan jewelry—its structures, combinations of materials, and place in everyday and ceremonial life—then considers how those elements can be worn now.

This is not a matter of placing traditional motifs onto a modern product. WOOTOUR studies proportion, construction, color and the relationship between the piece and the wearer. Familiar forms are reduced, reorganized or given a different scale. The result retains a connection to its source while allowing the jewelry to sit naturally with a shirt, a dress or a daily wardrobe.

Turquoise as Material and Relationship

Turquoise has long been valued across Tibetan regions. It appears in personal adornment and in objects made for important occasions. It has traditionally been associated with blessing, protection and care for loved ones. WOOTOUR works from this history while keeping the material itself at the center.

No two natural stones are completely alike. Variations in blue and green, mineral matrix and surface character are part of the stone rather than flaws to be erased. These differences give each finished piece its own visual rhythm. Set by hand and combined with metalwork, the turquoise becomes both a wearable material and a quiet record of the landscape from which such traditions developed.

WOOTOUR’s collections revisit several lines of cultural memory. Its Tibetan Heritage pieces draw from the structure and character of older forms of adornment. The Turquoise series focuses on the color and individuality of the stone. Other collections bring turquoise together with coral-colored elements or consider combinations connected to traditional ideas of completeness and good wishes. Across them, the brand’s method remains consistent: understand the source, preserve what matters, and make careful changes so the piece belongs in the present.

Made by Hand, Intended to Be Worn

WOOTOUR jewelry is handcrafted by experienced makers. For the customer, that work is visible in the small decisions: how a stone is selected, how a setting follows its shape, how an earring hangs, and how a pair feels in use. Handmade production can also leave subtle differences between pieces. Rather than making the objects interchangeable, these variations reveal the material and the maker’s hand.

The jewelry is not presented as a costume or as an object separated from daily life. It is made to be worn—to add color near the face, to mark a personal occasion, or to become part of an everyday way of dressing. That practical relationship matters. Cultural continuity is strongest when an object remains useful, understood and cared for, rather than being reduced to display.

Why Marichyai Works with WOOTOUR

Marichyai brings together objects from Tibetan and Himalayan regions whose materials, makers and uses can speak clearly in contemporary life. We do not replace WOOTOUR’s identity or speak on its behalf. Our role is to introduce the brand and its work to a wider audience, provide accurate product information, and create a respectful connection between the people who make each piece and the people who choose to wear it.

WOOTOUR reflects several values that guide this work: respect for inherited knowledge, attention to real materials, and the confidence to create for the present. Its jewelry carries memory without treating tradition as fixed. A turquoise earring remains first of all an object to wear—balanced, tactile and personal. Through that everyday use, a longer story continues.
